Five for… Monday!

Happy Monday!  Today was my first day back after spring break.  Whew!  I also totally missed the mark on Five for Friday, so I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching today!

1. Songs in the Key of Life
I started out my spring break by going to the Stevie Wonder concert in Minneapolis.  It was amazing!  He played his album "Songs in the Key of Life", and had probably about 30 people on stage with him- vocalists, orchestra, horns… And he played for just about three hours!  He is such a talented musician!

2.  Art in Bloom
Every year, Macy's downtown store puts on a flower show around a central theme.  This year they recreated famous works of art using flowers.  There were such beautiful blooms, and the whole 8th floor smelled heavenly!

3.  Pocketful of Sunshine
I even picked up my own little plant to take home!  It's called a "calceolaria", or pocketbook plant, and it's brightening up my classroom now.  We'll see how long I can keep it alive.  :)

4.  Buttercream Basics
Recently, I bought a cake decorating kit from Michael's and I finally got around to using it!  I started by practicing my buttercream skills.  It was SO fun!

5.  Huh?  What papers?
So…. I brought home a whole stack of papers to grade over break.  And I really had every intention of grading them…. But I literally forgot I had them until Sunday night.  Whoops!!!  I guess you could say that I had a restful break and really got my mind off of school!  :)

Be sure to link up and share your top five!

Five for Friday- I'm back!

Happy Friday, friends!

It's Friday, which means it's time to link up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for another Five for Friday!  Five for Friday is a weekly link-up for teachers to post updates to their week.  Now, I know I've been M.I.A. for the past few months… So I think this post will be more of a Five for the Past Five Months.  So here we go!

1.  New Look!

What do you think of my new blog design?!  I am in LOVE with it!  I asked PJs Design Laboratory to help me out, and I am so pleased with the result!

I've got all the fancy social media buttons up top… click around and if you feel so inclined… FOLLOW ME!  :)

2.  Classroom Reveal

The start of a new job took it's toll on me.  To be honest, I was unhappy, overwhelmed, and ready to quit (hence my absence in the blogosphere).  I talked with my doctor and got things figured out.  Now, I love my job (most days)!

Anyway, I missed the frenzy of everyone revealing their classrooms.  For the first few months of school, my room looked pretty bland.  But with each new month, I feel like I can take on a little more, and now my room feels near "complete".  Take a look!

Here's a peek at my room from the door.

Top left: I have a wonderful long counter in the back of my room, with nice shelves underneath.  I keep my word study bins and classroom library on the shelves.

Top right: I've had these drawers forever.  They used to house my craft supplies, but I brought one to school and keep all my copies and plans for each subject.  GREAT way to keep organized!

Bottom left: This year, I've let go of the mentality that my room needs to be "TpT bought" or "cutesy" or "digitally made".  I found that in order for things to actually get done, I need to just make them by hand.  Here's my reading groups and word study schedule.  Simple markers on construction paper.

Bottom right: I call this Grand Central Station.  In the back, my desk area, and in the front, my doc cam area.  I keep my name sticks, pens, textbooks, and you can see my subject copies cart there on the right.  Also on the left (not pictured), is a lamp I found in my parents' basement, which gives a nice warm light to the area.

3.  Wedding Weekend

This past weekend, Kendall's cousin got married in northern Minnesota.  I just love this photo of us from the reception.  Congrats Amy and Matt!

I know this is only a Three for Friday, but I've got some new posts in the works, so stay tuned!  Feels good to be back in the blogging world!

Five for Friday- Vegas Edition!

It's Friday, which means I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for Five for Friday!  Because I just went to Vegas, today's post will be all about my trip!

1.  TpT Swag

When we picked up our name tags for the FIRST EVER Teachers Pay Teachers conference, we got some awesome swag!  I've been using the bag ever since I got home!

2.  Amazing Sessions

During Kelley's session with TpT's Data Ninja Ryan Van Meter, they showed us some TpT stats from the audience they were presenting to.  Guess who was on one of their slides?

3.  The TpT Way

I asked someone to snap my picture in front of this TpT sign.

"We are proud professional educators… We seek to empower our careers and lives."

4.  Vegas Fun

Of course, we had a little bit of fun on the strip!

We saw the fountain show at the Bellagio, and on Fremont Street, we went to "Vintage Vegas", where they have old coin slot machines.  The High Roller observation wheel was so cool!  We got such a great view of the strip!  We tasted the best chocolate-covered macaroons from Bouchon Bakery in the Venetian.  We saw the Cirque du Soleil show "O" and it was A-MAZ-ING.  Can't forget our home away from home… the Venetian allowed us to live like queens for a few days!

5.  Starstruck!

The best part of the conference?  I got to meet Paul Edelman (the founder of TpT) and Deanna Jump (the teacher who has made over a million dollars with TpT).  I have to admit I was a little starstruck!

All in all, Vegas was AWESOME!  I am so glad I went and got to be a part of the first Teachers Pay Teachers conference.  I am definitely going next year!

Ms. Tarah is rocking her middle school basketball jersey.  Mr. Wolf is wearing a Cedar Rapids Kernels shirt (the Kernels are the Class A team that are part of the Minnesota Twins).
{{Did I mention Mr. Wolf is a long-term sub at our school now??  He's right down the hall in the middle school science room for the rest of the year!}}

Next week marks the start of our state tests.  Whew!  GET READYYY!

Five for Friday- April 4

It's Friday!  Which means I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for Five for Friday!

Here's what happened in Miss Woodward's Class this week:

1.  TpT Conference

Last night, I told you about some exciting news!  I will be going to Las Vegas this summer to attend the Teachers Pay Teachers Conference!  Read all about it here.  I am SOOOO excited!  Anyone else out there going, too?

Click the image to learn more about the conference.

2.  SNOW.

It's snowing right now.  Last night we got like 6 inches, maybe more.  That's all I'm going to say about that.

3.  Awards Assembly

Does your school do any type of Awards assemblies?  Each quarter we all gather in the gym, and teachers give out awards to students who showed exemplary behavior and hard work that quarter.  The awards we give are Perfect Attendance, Principal's List (all A's), Achievement (all A's and B's), Most Improved, and the RHINO award.

Our school mascot is the Rhino, so the Rhino Award is for students who show any of our five core behaviors:

R- Respect
I will be kind.
H- Help
I will help.
I- Inspire
I will encourage others.
N- Never give up
I will keep trying.
O- Overcome
I CAN do it!

4.  Fact and Opinion Game

Every day for 30 minutes, 3rd grade does SHINE time.  SHINE time is a time for students to work on reading and math skills.  We have all of the 3rd graders divided into five different groups, based on their needs.

My group has been working on fact and opinion, and thanks to my lack of planning, I was scrambling to find something for yesterday's SHINE time during my prep.  Oops!  I went down to our Title I room and found this game to play.

We divided into teams, and it worked perfectly!  The kids were engaged the whole time, and it really helped them practice their fact and opinion skills!

The game is from Lakeshore Learning.  There are TONS of other games like this to practice other reading skills.  If this seems like something you could use in your classroom, check it out here!

5.  Macy's Flower Show

Last weekend, I went to the Macy's Flower Show at the Macy's Store in downtown Minneapolis.  Every year, Bachman's puts on this lovely show of beautiful flowers.  It always puts me in a spring-y mood.   :)   The theme this year was "The Secret Garden".  Check out some of the photos I snapped.

How was your week?  Link up so we can hear all about it!  :)

Until next time,
- Miss Woodward

Five for Friday- January 3

I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for another Five for Friday!

5.  Not over yet….
Thanks to Minnesota being ridiculously cold tomorrow and Monday (not even kidding… it's forecasted to be -30!), all schools in Minnesota have been cancelled.  Which means I have two glorious days left of winter break!  And I'm soaking up every last minute of it!

4.  …. But I did go to school.
Ms. Eichhorn and I went in to school this week to get some lesson planning done.  We even got the copy room unlocked so we were able to make copies.  I got SO MUCH done, and it felt SO GOOD!  I planned our unit for the Human Body, and I can't wait to share my ideas with you!

So many copies…...

3. New Year's Eve
I went over to a friend (and coworker)'s house for New Year's Eve.  I printed off some photo booth props from this site and brought them over (FYI- I printed "Set #2" from the site).  They were so fun!

Me and Mrs. Boos

Me and Mr. Wolf

2.  Awww…..
My dad got a new hunting dog earlier this week.  Meet Trapper, an 8 1/2 week old British Lab.  What a cutie-patootie!  Now my parents have 3 furry friends in their house.  :)

1.  Minnesota Wild
For Christmas, I gave Mr. Wolf tickets to see the Minnesota Wild hockey team in St. Paul.  It was so fun!  And they broke a six game losing streak!

Mr. Wolf and I-- Go Wild!

Until next time,

Five for Friday- November 14

It's Friday again, so I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for the weekly Five for Friday!  Here's what happened this week in Miss Woodward's Class.

1.  Celebrating!
A good friend and coworker, Mrs. Elbert, celebrated her birthday this past weekend!  She is such a special lady, and I was excited to be able to share in her special day.  And now she is expecting her first child, so we had even more to celebrate!

Me, Mrs. Boos, Ms. Eichhorn, and Mrs. Elbert celebrating Mrs. Elber't's birthday.

2.  Pushing through the Polygons

We started our unit on polygons in math this week.  For my ELL students, learning polygon names and characteristics is really hard.  One of the first things we did with polygons was create a foldable to help remember polygon names and qualities.

On the outside flap, we wrote the name of the polygon (triangle, square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, pentagon, hexagon, octagon).  On the inside flaps, we cut out an example of the polygon, and wrote characteristics of the polygon.

The only materials we needed were large 11" by 17" paper, some shapes to cut out, scissors, glue, and a pencil!  It was a simple project to introduce polygons!

3.  You've Got Mail!

For writing this month, 3rd grade is working on writing letters.  My team and I decided to make the task into a grade-level project.  We set up each student with a pen-pal in one of the other classes.  Their job is to write a letter to their buddy and address it to the correct class.

Each classroom is going to have a mailbox outside their class.  Once students write their letters, they will give it to the "mail carrier" of the class.  The "mail carrier" will deliver the letters to the correct mailbox.  The "mail carrier" will then collect the mail from their class' mailbox and distribute it to the students.

Here is my class' mailbox.  I made it out of a cereal box covered in paper.  I used velcro squares to attach it to the wall in the hallway.  Isn't it neat?!  Can't wait to see how this writing project turns out!

4.  Dia de los Muertos

At the end of the day, we mix up all of the 3rd graders and have an intervention time.  Some groups get extra help in reading, and some in math.  In my group, we have been reading about Dia de los Muertos lately.  A middle school teacher saw the book laying on my desk and offered to bring in some authentic sugar skulls.  The kids went nuts for them!  Lots of "oohs" and "ahhs" were heard.

5.  Best for Last… Curriculum Night!

Thursday night was Curriculum Night at our school, and I was the representative for 3rd grade.  The idea behind the event was giving students and parents ideas of reading and math activities to do together at home.

Time and time again at conferences, parents tell me that they don't have access to the public library, and don't have books at home.  In my room for curriculum night, I printed off a variety of books from Reading A-Z for parents and students to take to read together.  I made sure to have a variety of levels available.  Some parents took four or five books!

I am also a firm believer in having kids talk with their parents about what they are reading.  To get the conversation going, I had students create a "story cube".  I found it on superteacherworksheets.com.  I printed it on card stock for durability, and had them cut and tape it together themselves.  I also showed them how their parents can roll the cube, and the students can answer the question on the cube using the book they just read together.  I printed off 50 of these cubes, and I had less than 10 left at the end of the night!  At some points, my room was so busy that I couldn't even greet everyone in there!  It was awesome!  I really hope that parents and students start to read together at home.

What happened this week in your class?

Until next time,
-Miss Woodward
